Gandalf

Gandalf

The Old Norse name Gandalfr incorporates the words gandr meaning "wand", "staff" or (especially in compounds) "magic" and alfr meaning "elf" or in a wider sense "(mythological) being". Hence Gandalf means roughly "magic–elf/being" or wizard.
