Parens patriae

As an aspect of the social contract between a state and its citizens, the state adopts a role of protector to the weaker and more vulnerable members of society. In public policy terms, this is the policy of parens patriae.

The trouble is the parent (Political Power) can be a Bully. They will use force to coerce the incapacitated to try and make them do something they do not have the capacity to do. In the Psi Cops (Millon pseudo science psychiatry) they will condemn the citizen (invalidate them). They may even use Christinanity or other religions as an authoritarian world view. They live in Ivory Towers.

Half-cock

Half-cock is a technical firearms term referring to the position of the hammer where the hammer is partially but not completely cocked. Many firearms, particularly older firearms, had a notch cut into the hammer allowing half-cock, as this position would neither allow the gun to fire nor permit the hammer-mounted firing pin to rest on a live percussion cap or cartridge. The purpose of the half-cock position has variously been used either for loading a firearm, or, as a safety-mechanism, or for both reasons.

Due Diligence Checklist

'Pre-Marriage Due-Diligence'

“The Due Diligence Checklist is truly amazing. I have downloaded this and distributed amongst my friends for discussion........I wish this sort of thing had been available to me when deciding whether or not to get married. The chat with the vicar didn’t really hit the spot and many issues just didn‘t get discussed (and I mean after the marriage too). Consequently that relationship failed over wanting children. As a single mum now, I shall be using the DCL as part of my decision making process if I start dating again, and I shall urge my children to do the same when the time comes”. Melanie Coombs

Is the glass half empty or half full?

Question for everyone. Is the glass half empty or half full?

The Engineer looked at me aghast and did not know what to say. Finally, he chirped up and said "it is obvious that it is half full of liquid and half full of air, so the only thing that counts is whether it moves." And the bartender nodded his head in agreement. Before everybody burst into song, the Scientist said " It is half full of liquid, the air is all around us, not just inside the glass..." Not it isn't, it is completely empty!" said the drunkard.

Caliban

Caliban

The name is an anagram of the Spanish word canibal, also the source of the English word "cannibal". Canibal comes from Christopher Columbus's designation Caniba for the Caribs. The name may also be inspired by the word Kaliban meaning black or with blackness in the English Romani language. As the first Romani immigrants arrived in England a century before Shakespeare wrote The Tempest, it is thought he may have been influenced by their exotic looks and manners. In this time Romanies in England were targeted for discrimination. Alternatively the name may originate from the Arabic for "wild dog".

Strangled Kestrel and the Tin Soldier

I was delighted to see two interesting short plays, that were a foil for
each other, at the Barn Theatre last Friday. The first with an unknown title
by an unknown (to me) writer was a common sense diatribe between a taxi
driver and Mrs scientist who arranged to meet at the Strangled Kestrel after
the Conference.

The second was a nastier basic re-interpretation of the
mixed message in John Fowles' book The Collector. There were more visuals in
the latter play and for those who did not know the book it came out as dark
and macabre. If Miranda Grey and Fred Clegg (play version) met on a train
they would arrange to meet at the Tin Soldier.

Intellect

Intelligence derives from the Latin verb intellegere; per that rationale, “understanding” (intelligence) is different from being “smart” (capable of adapting to the environment). Scientists have proposed two major “consensus” definitions of intelligence:
(i) from Mainstream Science on Intelligence (1994), a report by fifty-two researchers:
A very general mental capability that, among other things, involves the ability to reason, plan, solve problems, think abstractly, comprehend complex ideas, learn quickly and learn from experience. It is not merely book learning, a narrow academic skill, or test-taking smarts. Rather, it reflects a broader and deeper capability for comprehending our surroundings — “catching on”, “making sense” of things, or “figuring out” what to do.

Intimidation

“If we continually try to force a child to do what he is afraid to do, he will become more timid, and will use his brains and energy, not to explore the unknown, but to find ways to avoid the pressures we put on him.”

Fowles' own explanation of the purpose behind The Collector

Fowles' own explanation of the purpose behind The Collector

Fowles explained in his follow-up book The Aristos, that the main point behind the novel was to show what he felt to be the danger of class and intellectual divisions in a society where prosperity for the majority was becoming more widespread, particularly power (whether by wealth or position) getting into the hands of those intellectually unsuited to handle it.

Shadow Dance (Inner World of Choice)

“The psychological rule says that when an inner situation is not made conscious, it happens outside as fate. That is to say, when the individual remains undivided and does not become conscious of his inner opposite, the world must perforce act out the conflict and be torn into opposing halves.”— DR. CARL GUSTAV JUNG

Career Vision

Careers Plan

However, to develop a successful career vision, you need to find out about your own personality and interests. “It’s important to gain a broad understanding of yourself before trying to figure out your vision,” says Davison. “What really interests you and gets you going?”

Michelle Bayley, professional life and career coach for Find Your Way Coaching, agrees – and believes individuals shouldn’t create a careers plan before they have a good understanding of themselves.

-NTP Tricks of the Trade

Dig in your heels when being forced to do something you would have to be forced to do because you don't want to do it; defend any and all resultant asinine behavior on the grounds you are defending your right to choose how you spend your time. (I think this may qualify as a protip.)
When presented with an emotional appeal, turn off your emotion chip.
When presented with an emotion heavy crisis, turn off your emotion chip.
When presented with presented with a crying loved one, make sure the emotion chip is on. Unless it's a crisis.
A promise never made is a promise never broken. Promises limit options forward into an uncertain future. This is bad for exit strategies.
A certain amount of meandering creates unpredictability. Predictable people are the easiest to ambush.
Knowing yourself is good. Knowing how other people contrast with you is better. Knowing your enemy is even more useful.
Relying solely on intuition is irrational. Unless it's telling you GTFO.
Protip: Know how to STFU. Yes you must know the why, but it doesn't mean it's useful or wise to tell other people.
Knowing when to STFU is important too. But intuition on this requires training. Unfortunately.
